- The primary purpose of CGS is to uniquely identify issuers and issues of financial instruments around the world within a standard framework, and disseminate this data to the financial marketplace.
- CGS originates over 70% of all identifiers used in global securities transactions.
- Instrument coverage includes debt, equity, warrants, preferreds, units, UITs, CDs, medium term notes, commercial paper, mortgage-backed, private placement numbers (PPNs), and corporate bonds.

- Through CUSIP Access, an Internet-based service, you have access to the entire universe of CUSIP numbers that feature:
- Basic search by issuer description and CUSIP, which includes CUSIP number, CINS(CUSIP International Numbering Systems), CSB ISIN (CUSIP Service Bureau International Securities Identification Number) and U.S. ISIN.
- Special search options that include issuer description, issue type, maturity date, interest rate, update date, and dated date.
- Additional data on new CUSIP issues including bond counsel, state code, insured by, first coupon date, underwriter, indicators (yes/no), callable, IPO, pre-refunded, and depository eligible.

Standard & Poor's CUSIP Service Bureau assigns a nine-character CUSIP number to each mortgage-backed pool issued by the following federal agencies: Government National Mortgage Association (GNMA), Federal National Mortgage Association (FNMA), Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (FMAC), Small Business Administration (SBA), Federal Agricultural Mortgage Corporation (Farmer Mac).
