Standard & Poor's European Banks Hot Topics Seminar took place in London on 4th July 2007. The seminar addressed a range of issues of relevance to the sector today, and included a review of the potential sources of credit risk for European banks, with a specific focus on LBOs/leverage finance, unsecured consumer credit and specialist mortgages. Other topics covered included M&A and banking consolidation in Europe, as well as a review of banks' capital requirements under Basel II. In addition, representatives from the European Commission and the Committee of European Banking Supervisors commented on what external support was available to the bank sector in times of crisis, and this was followed by a presentation on how Standard & Poor's factors external support into the ratings of private sector banks.
