Compustat Standardisation

Since 1962, our specialised knowledge in data collection, standardisation and presentation has earned Compustat a level of authority unsurpassed in the financial information industry. More than simple data presentation, Compustat delivers a unique level of data comparability on which to analyse companies. We work to provide high-quality data so you can customise your research and better identify sound investment opportunities.

Standard & Poor’s uses an extensive four step process to collect and standardize fundamental company data, ensuring a high level of accuracy and delivering consistent, comparable data across companies, industries and time periods without reporting biases or data discrepancies. Our internal research team rigorously examines original company sources by carefully extracting financial information and reconciling data discrepancies. After collecting data from diverse sources, we standardize it by financial statement and by specific data item definition, preparing information that is comparable across companies, industries, time periods and sectors. This standardized presentation makes it easier to identify companies with similar characteristics, such as capital structure and operating performance and is designed to complement how the data is used. Additionally we analyze financial statement notes to provide detailed breakouts to gain additional insight overlooked by other companies.

Clients can select one unified Global database, or can choose from either the North America or Global data subsets. Data sets vary by delivery platform, and include:

  • Fundamental and market data on 65,000 global securities
  • Up to 20 years of annual and 12 years of quarterly history
  • Comprehensive company financial data, extensive balance sheet, income statement, and detailed footnotes
  • Thousands of data items, pre-calculated ratios and concepts, corporate actions and business descriptions

Analytic services and products provided by Standard & Poor’s are the result of separate activities designed to preserve the independence and objectivity of each analytic process. Standard & Poor’s has established policies and procedures to maintain the confidentiality of non-public information received during each analytic process.
