In October 1988, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) mandated the use of a uniform private placement number (PPN) by insurers to identify such investments in the annual statements filed with state regulatory authorities. Standard & Poor's CUSIPĀ® Service Bureau was selected by the NAIC to create, assign, and administer the PPN system (a CUSIP-like numbering system).
Features
Special Characters (*, @, #) are utilized in position 6, 7 or 8 of the CUSIP number to identify PPNs. These characters have numeric values of 36, 37 and 38, respectively, when computing check digits.
