Private Placement Numbers

Assigning PPNs for Insurance Companies

In October 1988, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) mandated the use of a uniform private placement number (PPN) by insurers to identify such investments in the annual statements filed with state regulatory authorities. Standard & Poor's CUSIPĀ® Service Bureau was selected by the NAIC to create, assign, and administer the PPN system (a CUSIP-like numbering system).

Features
Special Characters (*, @, #) are utilized in position 6, 7 or 8 of the CUSIP number to identify PPNs. These characters have numeric values of 36, 37 and 38, respectively, when computing check digits.
Delivery options
  • Transmission Service -- Relational database format. Subscriptions are available on an annual basis.

  • Internet -- PPN information is available through CUSIP Access (www.CUSIP.com).

  • CD-ROM Service -- PPN information is included with the CUSIP Master Service on CD-ROM. (If you already subscribe to CUSIP CD-ROM, you can access PPN securities at no extra charge).
