S&P North American Sector Indices

Acquired from Goldman Sachs Group in February, 2007, the S&P North American Sector index family provides investors with a suite of equity benchmarks representing U.S. traded securities across seven broadly defined economic sectors: Consumer; Cyclical; Financial Services; Health Care; Natural Resources; Technology and Utilities. Beginning in June 2007, the S&P North American Sector Indices used these broad economic sectors to define its indices, but the industry methodology used by Standard & Poor’s to classify stocks into these sectors is the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS®). Each sector index is a modified-capitalization weighted index, the constituents of which are selected according to objective screening criteria. The weight of a particular stock in each Sector Index is capped at a cap level determined on a sector-by-sector basis. Please consult the S&P North American Sector Indices methodology for more information.

Index eligible constituents at each rebalancing exhibit the following characteristics:

  • Market Capitalization -Over the market capitalization cutoff for its sector
  • Liquidity Ratio -At least 30%
  • Public Float -At least 20%
  • Listed -NYSE, AMEX, or NASDAQ
  • Eligible Companies -Must be member of the S&P Total Market Index or the S&P/TSX Composite Index
  • Stock Capping -Applied at constituent level. Individual stock weight caps may apply.

Index Governance and Policy
The S&P Equity Industry Index Committee maintains the S&P North American Sector Indices. All members are full-time professional members of Standard & Poor’s staff. The Committee reviews pending corporate actions that may affect index constituents, statistics comparing the composition of the indices to the market, companies that are being considered as candidates for addition to an index, and any significant market events.
